Civil War photograph, 1864.

Copy print photograph of James M. Darling, a Ripon, Wisconsin resident who served in Company E, 1st Wisconsin Cavalry during the Civil War. The image depicts Darling sitting in uniform, wearing his hat and holding the hilt of his sword with his left hand. Darling was born in Vermont and moved to Wisconsin sometime before the start of the Civil War. He enlisted in Company I, 7th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment in 1861. In 1862 he was discharged from the infantry due to a disability, but he re-enlisted with Company E, 1st Wisconsin Cavalry in 1864. Darling settled in Waldo, Wisconsin after mustering out in 1865.
